020303e Fire Protection Flashcards
If a large building is planned, but size is limited because of firefighting access, what can be done?
Increase the fire rating of the floor and ceiling or install an active suppression system.
What is a fire compartment?
Protects occupants from a fire in an adjacent area allowing them to evacuate or be protected in place.
What is a fire separation?
A construction assembly that acts as a barrier against the spread of a fire.
How is the fire resistance rating calculated for an exterior wall?
From interior only. The path of fire.
What is a fire resistance rating?
The time in hours or a fraction of, that a material or an assembly of materials, will withhold the passage of flame and the transmission of heat when exposed to fire.
What is accounted for in the component additive method of fire rating?
Only one side of membrane plus the framing member. The other membrane is expected to fail.
What special consideration must be given to firewalls while a building is under construction?
Special bracing because masonry walls are not designed to withstand lateral air pressure.
Describe the wired glass used as a fire separation.
Wired glass has thin strands of wire through ur to keep the glass in place during a fire condition.
If a hole has been drilled for a pipe to pass through a fire separation, what is an important check during the pipe installation?
The annular space around the pipe to ensure that not too much or too little space is provided.
What are some products designed to allow pipes to penetrate fire separations?
Intumescent (expands when heated) or endothermic caulking, firestop collars and firestop wrap strips.
What is an effective method of preventing flanking paths of airborne sound through tiny cracks?
Acoustic caulking/sealant
Why is mineral fibre insulation made from basalt rock and slag so good???
It is classed as a non-combustible material product with a high melting temp. Of 1000 deg. Celcius
If blanket insulation has two tabs, how are adjacent runs fastened together?
Tabs are aligned and stapled together at 200 mm (8”) oc, then the tab is folded over and stapled against at the same oc spacing.
What is a major safety concern when polystyrene rigid insulation is installed inside a building?
Needs fire protection (drywall cover) due to its combustible properties.
For which applications is mounded bead polystyrene not recommended?
Below grade or high moisture conditions.
Why extruded polystyrene foam insulation so so good?
Resistant to moisture absorption.
