01b Aortic arches Flashcards
What happens during development to the 1st aortic arch
It mostly disappears and a small portion remains as the maxillary artery
What happens during development to the 2nd aortic arch
It mostly disappears and a small portion persists as the Hyoid and Stapedial artery
What happens during development to the 3rd aortic arch
Forms the 1st part of the internal carotid artery
External carotid originates from 3rd arch
What happens during development to the 4th aortic arch
Left:
- Forms part of the aortic arch between common carotid and left subclavian arteries
Right:
- Proximal segment of the right subclavian artery
What happens to the 5th aortic arch during development
Either never forms or forms incompletely and then regresses
What happens to the 6th aortic arch during development
It forms the pulmonary arch
Left:
- proximal segment: proximal segment of left pulmonary artery
- distal segment persistes as ductus arteriosus
Right:
- proximal segment: proximal segment of right pulmonary artery
- Distal connection loses connection with dorsal aorta
