01.16-01.23 RPD Flashcards
if you have a “long-span edentulous area” and you want to do an RPD, what law should you follow and what does that law state?
-Ante’s Law: the area of the roots of teeth present needs to be greater or equal to the area of the roots that are being replaced
Nesbit Prosthesis
unilateral partial denture
Major connector
joins the components on one side of the arch to those on the opposite side
-maxillary major connectors provide surrport
minor connectors
join other parts of the RPD to the major connector
- some designs provide reciprocation
what are the objectives of RPD treatment?
it must always be “the preservation of that which remains and not the meticulous replacemetn fo that which has been lost”
- establish masticatory efficiency
- maintain/improve esthetics
- restore acceptable esthetics
- restore the patient’s mouth to an acceptable level of oral health
what is classification of RPD based on?
the major connector material
if the major connector is constructed of a cast metal alloy, the RPD is classified as….
a DEFINITIVE RPD
if the major connector is plastic the RPD is classified as….
an INTERIM RPD or TRANSITIONAL RPD
Interim RPD
-intended to provide esthetics and/or function until a more definitive form of treatment can be rendered. Temporary RPD=inappropriate term bc no dentures are permanent
Transitional RPD
-loss of additional teeth is expected- denture teeth can be added to a transitional RPD as natural teeth are extracted
______ receive all of their support from the abutment teeth and do not move much during function
tooth supported RPD
______ is supported by the tissues under the denture
- retention from wrought wire clasps and the contact of plastic below the height of contour
- Usually interim RPDs
- potential for soft tissue damage-short use
Tissue supported RPD
____ is supported at one end by natural teeth and at the other end by the denture bearing tissues
- do not move in function
- majority are bilateral or unilateral distal extension
tooth-tissue supported RPD
what is the name of the classification system that is based on the configuration of the remaining natural teeth and the edentulous spaces?
Kennedy-Applegate classification system
Kennedy Class I Arch
Characterized by bilateral edentulous areas located posterior to the remaining natural teeth
