01 Terminologies in Introduction to Pharmacology Flashcards
This is the study of drugs and their interaction with living things which
encompasses the physical, and chemical properties , biochemical and physiologic effects.
Pharmacology
This is the study of drugs in human for patients and healthy
volunteers.
Clinical Pharmacology
Refers to any chemical that can affect living processes.
Drug
One of the properties of an ideal drug which elicits the responses for which it is given that elicits the responses for which it is given.
Effectiveness
One of the properties of an ideal drug that cannot produce harmful effects even if
administered in very high doses and for a very long time.
Safety
One of the properties of an ideal drug which elicits only the response for which it is given.
Selectivity
One of the properties of an ideal drug which drug actions are subside
within an appropriate time.
Reversible Action
One of the properties of an ideal drug drug that we can know with certainty how a given patient will respond.
Predictability
One of the properties of an ideal drug refers to drug that is given
conveniently with low needed doses
Ease of Administration
Treated as independent persons capable of making decisions in their own best interests, right to self-determination.
Autonomy or Respect for Person’s Autonomy
It is very nurse’s duty to protect the patients or research subjects from harm.
Beneficence
This includes mutual sharing of information, expresses respect to
persons, gains active involvement in care and respects the right to self-determination.
Informed consent
Physical, psychological and social risks must be identified and weighed against the benefits.
Risk-benefit Ratio
Simply requires that the selection of
research subjects be fair.
Justice
This describes the drug’s chemical structure.
Chemical name
This is official, nonproprietary name, not owned by any company and
universally accepted.
Generic name
This is proprietary name, chosen by the drug company and registered
as trademark.
Trade or Brand name
Process of pharmacokinetics which refers to transmission of medications from the location of administration to the bloodstream
Absorption
Refers to the percentage of
administered drug available
for activity.
Bioavailability
Process of pharmacokinetics which refer to the transportation of medications to sites of action by bodily fluids.
