01: Introduction to Environmental Science Flashcards
The word that describes living and nonliving surroundings relevant to organisms
Environment
It incorporates physical, chemical and biological factors and processes that determine the growth and survival of organisms, populations, and communities.
Environment
This includes organisms and their environment within a specific area
Ecosystem
This studies all aspects of the environment in an interdisciplinary way. This means that it requires the knowledge of various other subjects including biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, microbiology, biochemistry, geology, economics, law, sociology, etc.
Environmental Science
It is a relatively new field of study that has evolved from integrated use of many disciplines
Environmental Science
This is one of the fastest growing and most complex disciplines of engineering.
Environmental Engineering
They solve problems and design systems using knowledge of environmental concepts and ecology, thereby providing solutions to various environmental problems.
Environmental Engineers
This is a social movement through which citizens are involved in activism to further the protection of environmental landmarks and natural resources.
Environmentalism
This is not a field of science, but incorporates some aspects of environmental knowledge to advance conservation and sustainability efforts.
Environmentalism
The factor for the survivability of organisms, populations, and communities.
- Physical
- Chemical
- Biological
What are the Physical Elements of the Environment?
- landforms
- water-bodies
- climate
- soils
- rocks
- minerals
What are the Biological Elements in the Environment?
- plants
- animals
- micro-organisms
- man
What are the Cultural Elements of the Environment?
- economical conditions
- social conditions
- political conditions
(Mostly all are man-made)
Components of the Environment
- Atmosphere
- Hydrosphere
- Lithosphere (or Geosphere)
- Biosphere
The Gas Portion of the Environment
Atmosphere
What are the Layers of the Atmosphere?
- Troposphere
- Stratosphere
- Mesosphere
- Thermosphere
- Exosphere
The Water Portion of the Environment; consists the 71% of the Earth; and the water cycle takes place
Hydrosphere
The Solid Portion, and the rigid outer part of the earth, consisting of the crust and upper mantle.
Lithosphere
A relatively thin life-supporting stratum of Earth’s surface, extending from a few kilometers into the atmosphere to the deep-sea vents of the ocean.
Biosphere
The global ecosystem composed of living organisms (biota) and the abiotic (nonliving) factors from which they derive energy and nutrients.
Biosphere
The living component of the ecosystem
Biotic Factor
The non-living component of the ecosystem
Abiotic Factor
What are the Importances of Environmental Studies
- To clarify modern environmental concept like how to conserve biodiversity.
- To know the more sustainable way of living.
- To use natural resources more efficiently.
- To know the behavior of organism under natural conditions.
- To know the interrelationship between organisms in populations and communities.
- To be aware and educate people regarding environmental issues and problems at local, national and international levels.
This is the discipline in philosophy that studies the moral relationship of human beings to, and also the value and moral status of, the environment and its non-human contents.
Environmental Ethics
Types of Environment
Geographical and Man-Made Environment
It consists of all components provided by nature and hence can be called as the natural environment.
It is also referred to as the physical environment as it pertains to the physical requirements of life. It includes natural resources, the earth’s surface, mountains, plains, land, water, deserts, storms, cyclones, volcanoes, oceans, climatic factors, and so on.
Geographical Environment
It is created by man in order to regulate and monitor certain environmental conditions.
Some address it as a social-cultural environment.
It can be and Inner Environment of Outer Environment
Man-made Environment
Two types of Man-made Environment
Inner and Outer Environment
It is a social environment and it exists as long as a particular society exists.
Inner Environment
This is the result of these modifications which includes modern infrastructure in cities, our homes and their associated amenities, our modes of communication and transport, our resorts to conveniences and luxury, different kinds of industry manufacturing luxurious commodities, electrical appliances and so on which ultimately aims at civilization and urbanization.
Outer Environment
