Q

Why are there no RDC’s #20 and #22?

A

RDC’s are numbered based on their being on the left side of the airplane (odd numbers) or the right side (even numbers). Because there are more RDC’s on the left side of the airplane (12) than on the right (9), numbers 20 and 22 were not used.

Q

RDC #19 fails. Can the airplane be dispatched?

A

Yes! The failed RDC must be in the #19 position before it can be dispatched. And, because the failed RDC is #19, the airplane can be dispatched after review of the appropriate DDG entry.

Q

RDC #12 fails. Can the airplane be dispatched?

A

Yes! However, the failed RDC must be in the #19 position. So, RDC #12 must be swapped with RDC #19 before dispatch.

Q

True or False, a RDC has two channels?

A

True! Each RDC has a channel A input from a channel A network switch, and a channel B input from a channel B switch.

Q

Why is a RDC connected to both a channel A and a channel B network switch?

A

For redundancy. The same data is transmitted “into” and “out of” each RDC over two channels in case there is some component failure (such as a FOX, network switch, etc.). So, two channels are for redundancy purposes to, ultimately, increase reliability that the data will arrive at the desired location.
