01 Basics Flashcards
What characterizes a polarized germinal center?
Polymorphous cells with lots of tingible body macrophages (TBMs) and apoptoses
What are the two zones present in germinal centers?
Light (centrocytes) and Dark (centroblasts + TBMs) zones
What is the level of mitotic activity in germinal centers?
High mitotic activity
What is the BCL-2 status in germinal centers?
Germinal centers usually BCL-2 Positive
What translocation is frequently associated with germinal centers?
t(14;18), IGH-BCL2 translocation
What distinguishes the appearance of germinal centers with a negative BCL-2?
Monotonous, ayoplaste tycology with few tingible body macrophages and scarce mitotic figures
What is Toxoplasma lymphadenitis caused by?
Toxoplasma gondii acquired from feces of cats
What are the symptoms of Toxoplasma lymphadenitis?
Acute lymphadenitis +/- fever; can disseminate in immunocompromised
What are the key findings in Toxoplasma lymphadenitis?
- Reactive follicles
- Epithelioid histiocytes in loose clusters and encroaching on follicles
- Monocytoid B cells in sinuses
