Q
  1. define tumor
A
  1. abnormal mass of tissue that results when cells divide more than they should or do not die when they should.

tumors may be benign (not cancer)

or malignant (cancer)

also called neoplasm

Q

liquids of the blood = liquid tumors (lymphoma and leukemia - come from blood cells) - assume that these are everywhere

everything else = solid tumors

malignant tumors do not respect anatomical boundaries

What has made the green guy different - mutation

what causes mutation - age, environment, acquire mutation by regular cell division

10^9 base pairs

need about 6 mutations to cause a tumor

Q

Define Neoplasia

A

abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth. a “new growth” of cels, originally derived from normal tissues that have undergone a series of genetic changes that makes them unresponsive to normal growth controls and allows them to expand beyond their normal anatomic boundaries
