[002] The shoulder Flashcards
rotator cuff muscles
blood supply and anastomoses
clavicle has 2 points of articulation
what do they articulate with
on the lateral end, articulate with acromion,
on the medial end, articulate with manubrium of sternum and first costal cartilage
what is the most commonly broken bone in the body
clavicle
what is shoulder separation
A shoulder separation is the partial or complete separation of two parts of the shoulder: clavicle and acromion
scapula motion
around vertical axis – glenoid turns anteriorly
around horizontal axis – glenoid turns superiorly or inferiorly
these motions possible because scapula can slide over posterior rib cage
what are bursae and what is the function of bursae
Bursae are closed sacs of synovial fluid surrounded by a synovial membrane.
Their function is to facilitate the free movement of structures such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, bones and skin over each other, reducing the friction between the adjacent moving surfaces.
the distribution of bursa is quite random, but where are the 4 consistent locations
subacromial bursa
subscapular bursa
subdeltoid bursa
(tendon sheath)
bursitis
inflammation of bursa, causing pain and restricting motion
what are the rotator cuff muscles
supraspinatus
infraspinatus
teres minor
subscapularis (anterior surface)
what are the possible movements of the shoulder
flexion, extension
adduction, abduction
circumduction
medial rotation, lateral rotation
protraction, retraction
shoulder dislocation, articulation of which bones are affected
glenohumeral joint
head of humerus not articulated with glenoid
what is the most ‘pure’ C5 muscle
deltoid
what innervates the deltoid muscle
axillary nerve (C5, C6)
what is a myotome
a region of skeletal muscle largely supplied by a single spinal cord level
