........... Flashcards
What is atomic radius?
The atomic radius is the size of an atom measured from the nucleus to the valence electron.
Why does the atomic radius of group 2 elements increase as you go down the group?
The atomic radius increases down the group because of the addition of more electron shells, which increases the distance between the nucleus and the valence electrons.
What is ionization?
Ionization is the process by which an atom gains or loses electrons to form ions.
Which groups of elements tend to lose electrons during ionization?
Elements in groups 1, 2, and 3 tend to lose electrons during ionization.
Why does the ease of ionization increase as you move down a group?
As atomic radii increase down the group, the attractive pull of the positive nucleus on the valence electrons decreases, making it easier for the atom to lose its valence electrons.
