They were opposed to slavery (the majority wanted to contain it, others wanted to abolish it)
Free labour (free movement of workers - both white and black)
Anti southern
Anti democrat
Nativist (it still attracted support from those in the North who were anti Catholic / immigrant)
However their free labour views attracted immigrants
