لما اتفرّقت العقول كل واحد عجبه عقله، ولما اتفرّقت الأرزاق ماحدش عجبه رزقه
When brains were passed out, everyone was pleased with his brains; but when fortunes were given out, no one was satisfied with his fortune.
أقول له ثور يقول احلبوه
I say to him, “It’s a bull” and he responds “Milk it.”
إذا كان حبيبك عسل ما تلحسوش كله
If your lover is honey, you don’t feel it all
الإسكافي حافي والحايك عُريان
The cobbler is barefoot and the weaver is naked
تجري الرياح بما لا تَشتَهي السُّفُن
Winds blow counter to what ships desire
الحاجة أمّ الاختراع
Necessity is the mother of invention.
من طلب العُلى سهِر الليالي
He who seeks the Most High stays awake at nights
إذا أنت أكْرَمْتَ الكريم مَلَكْتَهُ وإن أنت أكرمت اللئيم تمردا
Be generous to a generous person and you’d win him, be generous to a mean person and he’d rebel on you.
الإفْرَاط في التَّواضُع يجْلِب المَذلّة
Excessive humility brings humiliation
احذر عدوّك مرّة وصديقك ألف مرّة، فإن انقلب الصّديق فهو أعلم بالمضرّة
Be wary around your enemy once, and your friend a thousand times. A double crossing friend knows more about what harms you.
الكتاب يُقرأ من عنوانه
The book reads from its title
اِعقِلْها وَتَوَكَّل
Think it through, and trust God.
ما يأتي بسرعة يذهب بسرعة
What comes quickly goes quickly.
الذي لا يعرف الصّقر يشويه
He who does not know the falcon, would grill it.
كلّه عند العرب صابون
For the Bedouin it’s all soap.
لاقيني ولا اتغدّيني
meet me and don’t feed me lunch.
الله يرحم من زار وخفّف
May God have mercy on those who visited and relieved
ما تقول فول لَيْصِير بالمَكْيول
Don’t say ful (beans) until they’re on the measuring scale.
إن السلاطين في قلّة إخلاصهم مثل المومس كلما ذهب عنها رجل جاء رجل آخر.
The sultans, in their lack of sincerity, are like a prostitute. Whenever one man leaves her, another man comes.
