About Cellular Biology on Brainscape

What is Cellular Biology?

The cell is the basic organizational unit and the building block of all living things. There are many types of different cells, but each cell is considered unique. For instance, think about an amoeba, a one-celled organism that can only be seen under a microscope. The thing about the amoeba is that it does everything in one place. They take in food, digest stuff, consume and store energy molecules, reject waste materials, and get through everything they need to do, within a single cell. They don’t have organs to pump blood, or lungs to breathe air or a stomach to digest food. They are content to just blob, move around, and live the simple life.

But we – humans, like dogs, cats, and the rest of the multicellular animal kingdom, are eukaryotic. We are significantly more complicated than amoebas. Each cell in our bodies has its own specific roles related to the balance of materials and energy that keeps us alive and kicking. Our cells are the primary building blocks and the most basic unit in the hierarchy of increasingly complicated structure that make us what we are. From cells, tissues are formed. From tissues, organs exist. Organs then make up organ systems. And organ systems complete our bodies – bodies that make a human, well, human.

Cellular Biology, also known as Cytology, is a branch of biology that explores concepts about the cell (including amoebas and of humans) including its structure and its function. It revolves around the notion that “the cell is the fundamental unit of life.” Cellular biology allows understanding of the physiologic properties, signaling pathways, chemical composition, metabolic processes, and interactions of cells within a tissue, and their environment.

Cellular Biology is essential to all biological sciences. In Plant Science, it helps us to differentiate one plant from the other. Animal Science benefits from cellular biology regarding cellular specialization and compartmentalization as well. Even Forensic Medicine uses cellular biology to solve murders and assaults by DNA fingerprinting.

Through an increased knowledge in this field, vaccines were developed, some diseases were fully understood, fertility issues were solved, crops were genetically modified, and humans were able to survive!

Discoveries made by cellular biologists provide fundamental information to an understanding of every living organism, as it is integrated to other disciplines such as Genetics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Zoology, Immunology, Developmental Biology, and Physiology.

We study Cellular Biology to understand how a cell works, reacts, functions, and thrives in a healthy body and during diseased states. Cellular biology exists to prove that we are indeed, more special than amoebas.

Careers in Cellular Biology

A diploma in Cellular Biology opens up many career options in the science and healthcare fields. Jobs that are related to Cellular Biology include Cellular Biologist (of course!), as well as Biomedical Engineers, Physicians, Nurses, Microbiologist, Laboratory Technician, Fertility Specialist, Health Promotion Researcher, Pathology Technician, Toxicologist, Veterinarian, Forensic Scientist, and Academic Researcher, to name the most common ones.

Learning Cellular Biology

Anyone can learn Cellular Biology, but it's not always easy. Although courses may vary slightly, most don't require as much math as other sciences like astronomy and physics. It can still be challenging, however, because the subject involves many biological systems and processes.

One of the key tips in studying cellular biology is to study in intervals. Humans may be multicellular and complex organisms, but, we get tired too. Like cells, we function well when we are not exhausted. To avoid over fatigue in studying cells upon cells and thousands of taxonomy terms in cellular biology, try to study in intervals. Long and extended study periods with no breaks will not help you to study effectively. Your concentration will start to falter, and you will not remember things you need to remember.

Also, master general concepts (basic foundational ideas) before tackling specific ones.

Let’s say, for example, to be able to understand the Krebs cycle; you’ll need to understand the basics of animal cell structure. So, start with the basics!

This subject is full of complex systems and processes. That being said, you’ll need additional tools such as diagrams or drawings, charts, online videos, and crash courses to make the most challenging biological concepts easier to understand and remember. You can also use flashcards app to assist you with the learning process in retaining the intricate details of cellular biology as efficiently as possible.

Brainscape is one of the most beneficial supplementary tools to achieve this goal.

Cellular Biology in Brainscape

In Brainscape, you’ll find several classes, decks, and study cards for Cellular Biology – starting with the ones listed on this page. These classes are ranked by quality and number of users who viewed the class.

The classes in this subject are curated by various users such as university professors, publishers around the world, and as students who want to learn more about Cellular Biology.

In each class, you will find decks that are organized into groups, including topics from thebasics of cellular biology to complex topics like theories, properties of compounds, classifications, cellular transport, bioenergetics, cellular respiration, reproduction, and human biology.

Aside from that, you can also create your personal study decks in Brainscape! Studies say that authoring your own will be yet another technique to master anatomy or other challenging subjects in the academe.

Learn Faster in Brainscape

One of the many benefits of using Brainscape is the unique application of existing cognitive learning methods. This process, collectively termed Confidence-Based Repetition (CBR) by
Brainscape, is scientifically optimized to boost the normal learning process.

Confidence-Based Repetition makes use of highly-effective cognitive science techniques: Active Recall, Metacognition, and Spaced Repetition.

The process of Active Recall means "actively" retrieving the correct answer in mind, in contrast to simply "identifying" the correct answer amongst a series of multiple choice options. This principle of retrieval effort boosts the connections between neurons, and practices you to be able to remember things longer, even outside of class, in the real world.

Metacognition, on the other hand, requires you to reflect on how deeply you understand the concept. Upon presenting each answer, Brainscape’s platform will ask you to rate, from 1-5, of how well you knew your answer. This method strengthens memory trace – the actual process of storing memories for long-term use.

Brainscape also applies a learning process called Spaced Repetition. It works side by side with metacognition. While metacognition evaluates how well you understand the answer, Spaced Repetition analyzes how soon the cards will appear again. Based on your response about your confidence rating, Brainscape determines how frequent the card appears (with 1s coming up repeatedly and 5s hardly ever) until you report a higher rating. This personalizes your studies to focus on your weakness while warranting that you still periodically review the topics that you know well.

Thousands of research papers over the last few decades proved the efficacy and success of these study methods. If you want to verify how effective these methods are, try Brainscape! It can be an excellent additional tool in your study plan.

How to Get Started

The best possible way to enjoy the benefits of Brainscape is to start browsing some of the Cellular Biology classes on this page. You may browse each class to see how they are organized into decks and examine its contents to determine if they may suit your needs.  Once you have selected classes, you may start studying!

Brainscape hopes the very best for your study of Cellular Biology and other perplexing subjects you may be facing.  P.S. Don’t forget to enjoy!
