how did yuan shikai get him to step down
with power of his army he convinced the assembly that he should be president, sun hat sen resigned so not to cause a civil war
what happened in the new republic
it was meant to be democratic and in 1913 elections the GMD(set up by sun yat sen) won majority of the seats
what happened after election
in 1914 Yuan skikai got rid of the assembly and made himself president for the next 10years, by the end of 1914 he was basically a dictator 12/18 provinces in control
what did he want to do in 1915
to make himself emperor, 3 groups opposed this, GMD wanted democracy, military governors were afraid they would lose power and Japan wanted to take parts of china for itself
what were 21 demands by Japan
in 1915 Japan made demands that china had to accept of they would invade, they included taking over chinas factories, ports
effects of 21 demands
the army was angry and rebelled forcing yuan to abandon plans to make himself emperor, died June 1916
what happened after his death
no one had enough power to maintain control over china and government in bejing collapsed, old general took control and the era of the warlords took over for 11 years. in south GMD set up rival government
