Sentence types
Minor, simple, compound and complex sentences
Minor sentence
A sentence without a main subject or verb, usually one word eg Help!
Simple sentence
A sentence with one main clause eg The dog was running around
Compound sentence
A sentence with at least 2 main clauses joined with a comma or a conjunction eg It was raining and I forgot my coat.
Complex sentence
A main cause with at least one subordinate clause joined with a conjuction eg Kate got a detention because she forgot her homework.
Adjective
A word that describes a noun
Colon
Punctuation used to introduce lists and explanations eg I went to the shop and got: an apple, a banana and a pear
Semi colon
Punctuation used to link separate sentences that are joined in meaning
eg I can’t go out tonight; I have hw
Dash
Punctuation that separates information like brackets or shows an after-thought
