Yr 9 end of year test Flashcards
What is wavelength
The distance between two points after which the pattern repeats itself
What is amplitude
The distance between the undisturbed position(middle) and the peak or crest of the wave.
What is frequency
How many waves occur each second
What is period
The time it takes for an oscillation(one up and down to occur)
What is a transverse wave?
Particles move perpendicular to the energy(up and down)
What is a longitudinal wave
Particles move parallel to the direction of the the energy(back and forwards)
What is a mechanical wave?
A wave where vibrations travel through a medium(a substance)
What are electromagnetic waves?
These are waves that travel through a vacuum, no medium(substance) is needed
List the electro magnetic wavelength from largest wavelength to smallest wavelength
Radio waves, microwaves, infra-red, visible light, ultra-violet, x-rays and gamma rays
How are electro magnetic spectrum the same.
They all are waves
What is different about electro magnetic waves
The wavelength radio waves go from 50cm to gamma rays which have a wavelength of 10 pilometers
Why is the electro magnetic spectrum dangerous
They can damage cells
The is the wave speed equation
Speed=frequency x wavelength
What is the relationship between frequency and period
Frequency =1/period
Period=1/frequency
Which different surfaces absorb and emit infrared radiation more or less effectively
Dark and matt materials are good at emitting and absorbing infrared radiation
Light and shiny materials are bad at emitting and absorbing infrared radiation
