Yr 9 Conduction + Convection Flashcards
What is the process of conduction?
Vibrating particles transfer energy to neighboring particles, usually in solids
Why does it usually occur mostly in solids?
Particles in solids are held closely, causing more collisions than in liquids or gases
What is the process of convection?
Usually in liquids, rising motion as particles become less dense gaining kinetic energy forcing them to rise above the cooler particles, this process is repeated
Does radiation require particles to transfer heat?
No, it is transferred through waves, usually infrared waves
What does the amount of energy transfer through conduction depend on?
The thermal conductivity
What is a control variable?
The thing you can control and keep the same throughout the experiment
Dependent variable?
The thing that is changing
Independent variable?
The thing that is altered throughout the experiment
If something is silver and shiny what does it do?
It reflects the warmth from something back in so it doesn’t escape
Define infrared radiation
A type of wave called an electromagnetic wave which transfers thermal energy through the form of a wave
What are the 3 main factors that depend on the temp rise?
Amount of energy, the mass of the substance, what the substance is
What is the symbol equation for SHC?
E = MCT
What is double-glazing?
2 panes of glass with a vacuum between them
What is fiberglass insulation?
Trapping of air between the synthetic fibers
What are draught excluders?
They seel off any unwanted draft
