What are runes?
Runes are letters of the Scandinavian alphabet based on Roman or Greek letters but modified to be easily carved on materials.
What is a fjord?
A fjord is a long, narrow inlet flanked with high cliffs and slopes.
What does arable mean?
Arable means land that can be ploughed for crops.
What is a primary source?
A source from the time of the event when it was recorded.
What is an example of a primary source?
- A manuscript.
- A tomb with carvings on it.
- An observation.
- Objects from the time they were made.
What is a secondary source?
A source made after the time or event concerned.
What is an example of a secondary source?
- An interview with a witness of a crime.
- A drawing or painting of the scene.
- A picture of the scene.
What is polytheism?
Polytheism is a type of religion that worships or believes in more than one god. E.g. Paganism, Ancient Egyptians, Hinduism.
What is monotheism?
Monotheism is a type of religion that worships or believes in only one god. For example, Christianity, Buddhism.
What boats did Vikings use for raids?
They used longboats.
Sometimes, longships were called dragons ships, why?
They were renamed because the ships had a carved head of a mythical creature on the prow of the ship. Usually a dragon’s head.
What are cairns?
Cairns are carefully arranged piles of stones.
Why were cairns used?
They were usually intended as landmark for travellers, they were also used for graves sometimes.
What are saga’s?
Saga’s were medieval Scandinavian tales about exploits and adventures in the life of a hero and his/her family, carved on stone, wood and other materials.
A.) Why were the states of Europe bickering after the fall of the Roman Empire?
B.) How did this benefit the Vikings?
A.) The states of Europe were bickering because after the fall of the Empire, the people were fighting over land and splitting up Europe.
B.) It benefited the Vikings because the states were already preoccupied and weakened already.
