Q

Why do some earthquakes happen away from plate boundaries?

A

Convection currents occur right across the mantle, not just at the plate boundaries. The causes weaknesses in some plates, or partial fractures which can lead to some seismic activity/earthquakes.

Q

What happens when a continental plate and ocean plate crash into eachother?

A

The ocean plate subducts into the mantle but is then is forced up, creating a volcano.

13
Q

What happens when 2 ocean plates crash into eachother?

A

The older plate subducts below the younger one and the subducted crust melts from the heat of the mantle which is forced to the surface creating an island arc.

16
Q

What is the vent?

A

The hole where theproducts of the eruption emerge is called thevent.

17
Q

Where is the vent?

A

The ventis usually in thecraterat the top of the volcano

18
Q

What is a shield volcano?

A

A volcano formed by thin lava that spreads widely before cooling and hardening.

19
Q

What are shield volcanos built of?

A

Lava flows that have built up over time.

20
Q

What are cinder cone layers made up of?

A

Heavier rocks near the vent, and cinders and ash towards the edges.

21
Q

What are dome volcanoes shape formed by?

A

Thick lava that cools and hardens rapidly.

22
Q

What are composite volcanoes?

A

Bodies of igneous rock formed when magma has cooled.

23
Q

What are layers of composite volcanoes made of?

A

Cooled lava and ash

24
Q

Does a composite volcano have a secondary cone?

A

Yes

25
