Yr 2 Stuffs Flashcards
Define force feild
A region in which a body experiences a non-contact force
Define Gravitational field strength
Force per unit mass
Plotting graphs of G (Gravitational field strength) against r for earth earth
G is Greatest at surface of the Earth
Define gravitational potential
Gravitational potential energy of a unit mass at a certain point
Graph of V against r in radial gravitational field
Define gravitational potential difference
The energy needed to move a unit mass
What are equipotentials?
Lines and surfaces that join all points with the same gravitational potential. Travelling along equipotential, gravitational potential difference is zero, as no work is being done against Gravitational force
Equation for orbital speed
Relation of period to radius for orbit
Escape velocity
Total energy of a sattelite…
Is always constant, is the sum of kinetic and gravitational potential energies
Synchronous orbit
When object has an orbital period equal to rotational period
Geostationary satellites
-same distance above earth (36000 km)
-Aligned along the plane of the equator
-same angular velocity of earth, so satellite remains above one point of earth’s surface
Low orbiting sattelites
Any satellites which orbit between 180 and 200 km above earth
-cheaper to launch, need less powerful transmitters
-need multiple satellites for constant coverage
Equation for period of orbiting satellite
