Yr 11 Assessment 1 Biology Flashcards
define Homeostasis
How the body maintains a constant internal environment ( ie, 37degreesC, same blood glucose levels, H2O levels etc.)
How to electrical impulses travel through the body?
Along nerve cells called neurons
What is the difference between a reflex action and a normal action?
In a reflex action, the spinal chord plays the role of the CNS to make the reaction quicker in order to react to a danger. In a normal action there is no danger and the CNS is the brain.
Relay the reflex arc in order
Receptor, sensory neurone, spinal chord, relay neurone, motor neurone, effector.
You touch a hot object and need to perform a reflex action. What is the first part of the body to react to the stimulus.
Touch receptors in the hand/fingers.
You see a ball flying towards you and want to move out of the way. In this case, where are the receptors?
In the eyes.
Which neurone takes the electrical impulse to the CNS?
Sensory neurone
Which neurone takes the impulse away from the CNS and to the next neurone?
Relay neurone
Which neurone takes the impulse to the effector?
Motor neurone
Define effector in a reaction
The effector is the muscle/gland that brings about the reaction.
What chemical is released when the electrical impulse reaches the synapse?
Neurotransmitter chemicals
FOLP
FSH, Oestrogen, LH, progesterone
Role of progesterone
Maintains lining of the uterus during 2nd half of menstrual cycle or pregnancy if necessary.
Inhibits release of LH and FSH.
What is chemical equation for glucose?
C6H12O6
Which two reproductive hormones are released by the pituatary gland?
FSH, LH
