You Be The Chemist Flashcards
Carl Sagan Quote about Science
“Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of facts.”
- Carl Sagan
What is Science?
Science is a systematic way of learning about the world around us. The combined efforts of many to understand our world.
Scientific Inquiry
Scientific inquiry describes the different ways scientists explore the world.
What is observation?
Observation is exploring the world around us through our 5 senses.
What is Research?
Research is searching through past observations to help understand and design an accurate experiment.
What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a clear statement of what you believe will happen in an experiment. A hypothesis can be proven wrong.
What is an experiment?
An experiment is a scientific test to prove or disprove a hypothesis.
What are data?
Data is a collective noun referring to pieces of information gathered in an experiment. Plural: Datum
What is a conclusion?
A conclusion is a statement telling whether your hypothesis was correct and what the outcome of your experiment was.
What is an independent variable?
The independent variable, or manipulated variable is the variable that is changed in you experiment.
What is a dependent variable?
A dependent, or responding variable is the variable that is observed when the manipulated variable is changed.
What is a theory?
A theory is an idea that is not fact, can be changed, has been tested over and over with the same results, and explain why things happen.
What is a law?
A description of a natural event that appears over and over in certain conditions. They are accepted as universal, but can be challenged.
What is accuracy?
To get as close as possible to the true measurement.
What is precision?
To be able to get the same measurement over and over.
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of stuff in a given object. One way to measure mass is how hard it is to change velocity. It is also meshed with a balance scale.
Unit: Gram
What is weight?
Weight is a measure of gravitational force on a small object from a larger one. It is related to mass and distance between the objects.
Unit: Pound/ Newton

What is length?
The distance an object spans or how long the object is.
Unit: Meter
What is volume?
The amount of space matter occupies.
Unit: Liter/ Centimeter
One thousand cubic centimeter equals…
1 Liter
What is temperature?
The average amount of kinetic energy in a substance, also a measure of hot and cold.
Unit: Degrees/Kelvin,Fahrenheit, Celcius = KFC = hot chicken!
Temperature Conversion K to C
K = C + 273.15
Temperature Conversion C to F
(1.8 x C) + 32 = F
What is density?
The amount of matter per unit of volume.
D = M/V
Temperature increases…
Density decreases.
What is pressure?
The amount of force exerted on a substance.
Units: Pascals, atmospheres, torrs, millimeters of mercury, psi
