I am a spontaneous, happy-go-lucky sort of person, but I am pretty down-to-earth too.

As you can imagine, I think spontaneity is a positive attribute- I love things to be a bit unpredictable.

There’s a new guy living next door to us and I didn’t know what to make of him at first. He wasn’t very friendly and he walked about as if he was ‘Mr-Know-it-all’, so he struck me as rather conceited.
I just didn’t take to him at all. He took my parking space several times, which really got up my nose. So last night, I decided to be assertive and challenge him about it.
He was fine and apologized! I was really quite surprised.

I felt bat not giving my dog any food when he was ill, but you have to be cruel to be kind.
Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind (= make somebody suffer because it will be good for them later).
A person who seems aloof and stand-offish may just be shy and diffident.
