Yorkist Challenge Flashcards
Who did Lambert Simnel claim to be?
The Earl of Warwick
Where was Simnel able to raise support?
- The Yorkist stronghold of Oxford
- He was crowned Edward VI in Ireland
- He received money and 2000 mercenaries from Margaret of Burgandy
How did Henry attempt to deal with the rebels in Simnel’s rebellion and what eventually happened?
- He offered the rebels a pardon and paraded the real Earl of Warwick in London.
- Ultimately, Henry’s men won at the Battle of Stoke
Why did Simnel’s rising fail to gain widespread support?
Ordinary people may have been fed up with the chaos of the Wars of the Roses or may have disliked the Irish force which accompanied Simnel as they had a reputation for brutality.
How was the Battle of Stoke similar to the Battle of Bosworth?
- A weak claimant had been able to attract support and bring the king to battle.
- Many of Henry’s men held back from fighting until the outcome appeared clear which had not been obvious from the start as the mercenaries were experienced.
Who did Warbeck claim to be and why did this claim make it difficult for Henry?
- Richard, Duke of York.
* He was supposedly murdered in the Tower, so Henry could not parade the real Richard around.
What was Warbeck’s geographical journey?
Ireland -> France -> Flanders -> Deal -> Ireland -> Scotland -> Ireland -> Exeter/Taunton
