Yoga Sutras
traditionally assumed to be the work of Patanjali
Yoga
restriction of the fluctuations of citta, calming the mind so that purusha can be seen
Citta
psycho-physical consciousness in prakriti minus purusha leading to the pure consciousness
patanjali’s five forces of bondage
ignorance, egoforce, infatuation, dislike/aversion, drive for immortality
Ignorance
lack of knowledge of the nature of purursha, confusing purursha with prakrti
Ego-force
the will to survive as psycho-physical being
Infatuation
grasping and attachment, false self grabbing to things in passing existence
Dislike/aversion
combined with infatuation, creates a pushing and pulling that drives an person and frustrates them
Drive for immortality
fear of death, rooted in ignorance
Eight groups of yoga techniques
moral restraints, spiritual observances, postures, disciplined breathing, withdrawing from the senses, concentration, meditation, highest concentration
Moral restraints
designed to get rid of the ego; nonhurting, right speech, not stealing, non grasping, celibacy
Spiritual observances
dispose one toward spiritual existence; cleanliness, contentment, asceticism, study, devotion
Postures
designed to discipline the body and bring it under control; many different positions
Disciplined breathing
controlling breath is important because it makes available vital energy for life
Withdrawing from the senses
shuts off sensory inputs to the consciousness
