In the Short story ‘the yellow wallpaper’ written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman in 1891, explores the theme of isolation, cruelty, post-natal depression and the main one being oppression in marriage. The Narrator/protagonist is a complex character whom the reader has sympathy for as we can see what she goes through. Gilman wrote this story as she suffered from a mental illness herself and wanted to help people from driving themselves insane and it has worked.

A

This short story is written like a diary from a woman who has a nervous condition. The woman who is the narrator of the story had a baby but is unable to see it. She is married to a controlling physician who takes her to a country house ti get ‘better’. The narrator is put in a secure room with a yellow wallpaper and is banned from doing certain things including writing. She
