Yellow Fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease.
It is caused by a flavivirus which is transmitted by the Haemagogus mosquito species.
It is known as ‘Yellow’ Fever in light of the jaundice that results in some patients.
Yellow Fever can be found in South and Central America,

How does Yellow Fever present?
The illness presents in three stages:
Stage One
Classically, patients develop a severe flu-like illness with fevers up to 40°C. Other symptoms might include:
- Epigastric pain
- Vomiting
- Relative bradycardia (Faget’s sign)
Stage Two
Recovery for a few days
Stage Three
- High fevers
- Jaundice
- Hepatomegaly
- Severe bruising
- Gum bleeding
- Haematemesis
- Melaena

How is Yellow Fever investigated?
Liver biopsy in late disease demonstrates;
- Mid-zone necrosis
- Eosinophilic degranulation of liver cells
