Yeasts Flashcards
Yeasts
Eukaryotic
Single-celled microorganisms
At least 1,500 recognized
Constitue 1% of all fungal species
Yeast Evolution
Yeasts are unicellular organisms that evolved from multicellular ancestors
Some yeast species have the ability to
develop multicellular characteristics by forming strings of connected budding cells known as pseudohyphae.
Yeast Reproduction
Mosts reproduce asexually by mitosis, and some by asymmetric division process known as budding.
“Yeasts” taxonomy
Yeasts do not form a single taxonomic grouping. Yeasts are in one of two phyla: Ascomycota and Basidiomycota.

Louis Pasteur proved
that alcoholic fermentation was conducted by living yeasts and not by a chemical catalyst
