*Requires OLIVE OIL to grow in culture
What yeast is this?
Frequently seen in CSF
Cryptococcus neoformans.
Cryptococcosis is a primary infection of the lungs which is caused by Cryptococcus neoformans. Dissemination is rare in heathy individuals, but common in immunocompromised patients. The central nervous system is the most frequent site of dissemination. Skin and viscera are also involved in a small percentage of patients.
healthy people, cryptococcosis is usually asymptomatic, or mild and self-limiting.
