YEAR 9 – Topic 3 – Movement and Position Flashcards
What does acceleration mean?
Acceleration is the rate of increase of velocity with time.
What does displacement mean?
The distance moved in a specific direction; a vector quantity.
What does distance mean?
The distance moved without considering direction; a scalar quantity.
What is the gradient?
The slope of a graph line measured as the rate of increase of the y-axis variable with respect to the x-axis variable.
What is the gravitational field strength of earth?
10N/Kg
What is a gravitational field strength?
The force in newtons exerted per kilogram of mass by gravity.
What is the reaction time?
The time taken until there is a conscious response in humans to some event or stimulus.
What does scalar mean?
A quantity with magnitude (size) but no specific direction. Examples: energy, mass
What does speed mean?
Distance travelled per unit of time.
What is a vector?
A quantity that has both magnitude (size) and direction. Examples: velocity, acceleration and force
What is velocity?
The rate of increase of distance travelled in a specified direction with time.
What does weight mean?
The force acting on a body due to its presence I’m a gravitational field.
What is the average speed equation?
Distance
(Average) Speed =—————-
Time
How do you remember the average speed triangle?
Silly Daft Twit
How do you work out the gradient of a graph?
Change in y
Gradient = ——————
Change in x
How do you work out acceleration?
change in velocity A = —————————— Time -OR- V-u A = ——- T
What is the difference between velocity and speed?
Speed is how fast something is moving, whereas velocity is how fast an object is moving relative to the starting point.
How do you remember the acceleration triangle?
All Very Tired
Change in V
A = ——————
T
How do you work out the distance travelled on a velocity time graph?
Work out the area beneath the line.
How do you work out the acceleration on a velocity time graph?
Work out the radiant (rise/run)
