Year 9 topic 1 Flashcards

1
Q

What is an atom?

A

Atoms are made up of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons that are protected by shells. Also everything you touch be it your face or a brick is made up of atoms. An atom is close to being the smallest thing in the world after a quark.

Q

What is a compound?

A

A compound consists of atoms of different elements chemically combined together ,compounds form in a chemical reaction and only can be separated back into there original elements with another chemical reaction.

Q

What is an element?

A

An element is a substance that is made up of only a single kind of atom, the atoms in a element are the same as all the other atoms in that single element and they aren’t the same as the other atoms in other elements.

Q

What is an electron?

A

An electron is something inside an atom with has energy levels also known as electron shells, which are placed outside the nucleus. Different types of shells can hold a different number of electrons.

Q

What is a proton?

A

A proton is the positively charged particles which are present in the nucleus of an atom. One or more protons are in the nucleus of every atom to exist in the world. Protons are always accompanied by a neutron or neutrons.

Q

What is a neutron?

A

A neutron is a subatomic particle that forms the central nucleus of almost all atoms along with the protons. They have a neutral electric charge and have the same relative mass as a .positively charged proton

Q

What is evaporation?

A

Evaporation is the process of a liquid turning into a gas, it is a slower prices than boiling as it occurs at temperatures below the boiling point of a liquid.

17
Q

What is condensation?

A

When a gas loses energy or (gets colder) it becomes a liquid or as known water most commonly.

18
Q

What is distillation?

A

A separation method that is the process of evaporation followed by the condensation, or the boiling of then mixture and condensing the gas to produce a liquid.

19
Q

What is a distillate?

A

The pure liquid obtained after the process of evaporation then condensation resulting in the product or distillate.

20
Q

What is a a boiling point?

A

The boiling point is the temperature at which molecules evaporate at the fastest rate (liquid to gas).
