What is the definition of First Aid?
First aid is the first and immediate assistance given to any person suffering from either a minor or serious illness or injury.
Who can deliver and assist with First Aid?
Anyone, but a trained person is preferred.
What are the 4 Principles of First Aid
- Protect
- Prevent
- Promote
- Preserve
What does the Principle “Protect” mean?
Protect the casualty from further danger. Remove the victim from the source or remove the cause
What does the Principle “Prevent” mean?
Prevent the injury from becoming worse and cover the wounds, immobilise fractures, make the patient comfortable
What does the principle “Promote” relate to
Promote recovery, lessen anxiety, relieve pain , handle gently.
What does the Principle ‘Preserve” relate to?
Control bleeding, lessen shock, give mouth to mouth or compressions
What is the Acronoymn DRSABCD stand for?
D- Danger
R- Response
S- Send
A- Airway
B- Breathing
C- CPR
D- Defibrillation
What is An Example of a Sporting Injury?
- Sprained Ligaments

A crack or break in the bone
What is the definition of a Dislocation?
A bone in a join that has moved out of place
What is the definition of a Sprain/Strain?
Damage to soft tissues
What is a Soft Tissue Injury?
Is thedamageof muscles, ligaments and tendons throughout the body.
What is the Symptoms of a Sprain Injury?
1.Feeling a tear or pop in a joint followed
2.Pain, swelling, and bruising
3.Stiffness or instability of the joint
4.Red skin
What is the Symptoms of a Strain Injury?
1.Sharp pain at the site of an injury
2.Muscle spasms
3.Swelling
4.Cramping
What is the acronym TOTAPS?
T- TALK
O- Observe
T- Touch
A- Active Movement
P- Passive Movement

What does ‘TALK’ mean?
Talking to an athlete is the first step of assessing an injury.
What does Observe Mean?
Observing an injured body part is incredibly important. If a limb has been injured, always compare the injured limb to the uninjured limb.
Look for open wounds, bleeding, swelling, open fractures.
What does “TOUCH” mean?
Feel for any tenderness over the injury site. Severe tenderness when feeling a bone may indicate a fracture.
What does “ACTIVE MOVEMENT” mean?
Active movement involves the athlete moving the injured part themselves. Ask them to perform a range of movements to see ifthese movements bring on pain.
What does “PASSIVE MOVEMENT” mean?
Passive movement involves you (as the first aider) moving the injured part / joint through its whole range of movement. You should stop if any of the movements bring on pain.
What does a Skills Test mean?
This involves the athlete performing some basic skills relevant to their sport to see if these movements exacerbate the injury.
What does the acronym RICER mean?
R- REST

R- REFERRAL
What does the ‘Don’t Do- No harm’ acronym mean?
H- NO HEAT
