Year 9 Core 1 Flashcards
What is evaporation
The heat causes water vapour to rise into the atmosphere because of the ocean
What is condensation
The water vapour cools which turns into water droplets which form clouds
Precipitation
Once the water becomes too heavy for the clouds to hold it rains
Transpiratation
Water vapour also evaporates from the damp ground and is released by the leaves on trees and plants
Infiltration
When water moves into the surface and starts to soak into the soil and rock underneath
What’s surface water
When some rain falls on land and runs back into the ocean through rivers and streams
Ground water
Some water moves into underlying rock this is called percolation, the water moves through the rock to the bottom of the slope into ground water
Source
The start of a river
Mouth
Where the river joins the sea
Tributary
A small stream that joins a longer river
Meander
A sweeping Bend in a river
Confluence
the area drained by a river
Watershed
The boundary from one drainage basin to another
Abrasion
Sand and stones in the river scrape the bed and banks wear away
Attrition
When stones bump into each other and wear each other away
