it is dense and stable looks attractive grows fruit (like acorns) doesn't crack or splinter is strong wide trunk

takes a long time to mature very expensive rare rarely planted mostly imported oversea could become extinct close grain is difficult to work with

grows quickly can grow commercially cheaper strong and durable easy to work with

grain and colour isn't as attractive can bow and twist isn't too tough splinters easily can be water damaged has a small trunk
why might hardwood become extinct
it takes so long to grow the the people who planted would be dead by the time the hardwood has matured, meaning they wont be able to sell it

they do not look nice plywood splinters when cut MDF doesn't look like wood chipboard doesn't have structured strength dust is hazardous to health glue prevents it being recycled tools blunt quickly on them

they are cheaper MDF is easy to cut they can be made in big chunks flat and looks strong resistant to warping made from recycled wood good for painting or staining easy to use on machines
