Year 8 WPS "OMAM" plot Flashcards
We meet George and Lennie in an idyllic, natural setting of the brush which has been visited by many other itinerant workers. They have had to run away because Lennie has got into trouble. They discuss their dream to “live off the fatta the lan”.
Part 1
The Brush
They arrive at the ranch and a bunkhouse. George reminds Lennie that if he gets in trouble, he must run to the brush and hide. We meet Slim and Carlson. We meet Curley and he takes an instant dislike to Lennie, and then his wife who is branded a “tart” by the men and Lennie is warned to stay away from her. The chapter ends with Lennie asking George to get him a puppy from Slim’s dog’s litter.
Part 2
The Bunkhouse
Candy’s dog is old and smelly and is seen as being no use. It is shot by Carlson. George and Lennie’s conversation about the dream is overheard by Candy who offers to add in some of his money to join them on their own ranch. Curley attacks Lennie, Lennie crushes his hand and Slim tells him to pretend his hand was crushed in a machine.
Part 3
The Bunkhouse
We are introduced to Crooks. Lennie enters Crooks’ room and Crooks can’t help but talk to him. He has had a very hard life and people don’t like him because he is black. Candy enters and joins the conversation. Crooks seems to soften and want to be part of the dream too. Curley’s Wife and is cruel to Crooks. The chapter ends with Crooks alone and sad again.
Part 4
Crooks’ Room
Lennie is alone in the barn and we learn that he has killed his puppy. Curley’s wife enters the barn and they talk ; Curley’s wife reveals that she is terribly lonely and that she knows her husband “isn’t a nice fella”. She then talks at Lennie, all about her past and how she wanted to be an actress. She tells him to stroke her hair because it is soft. Lennie panics and accidently kills her. Lennie knows he should hide in the brush and runs away, the other men follow when they find the body.
Part 5
The Barn
The chapter opens with a description of the brush, similar to Part 1. Lennie is very distressed and worried. George finds Lennie in the brush and talks to him about the dream. He makes Lennie look out across the pond, and then puts him out of his misery. Carlson , Candy and Slim discover George standing over Lennie. Slim leads George away and Carlson says,“Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin’ them two guys?”
