Year 8 Periodic Table Flashcards
Element
An element is a substance that is made up of only one type of atom.
Group on the periodic table
A group is the rows on the table excluding the transition metals, lanthanides and actinides.
Period
A period is the columns on the periodic table.
Alkali metals
The alkali metals are all the metals in group 1
Alkaline earth metal
Alkaline earth metals are all the metals in group 2
Halogens
The halogens are all the gases in group 7
Noble Gases
The noble gases are all the gases in group8/O
Transition metals
The transition metals are the big block of metals in the centre in the table. They don’t follow a set pattern of how many electrons they have.
Periodic Table
The Periodic table is a table that lists all of the known elements in various patterns e.g. the amount of electrons each element has.
Metal + acid
Metal salt + hydrogen
Nitric acid + calcium
Calcium nitrate + hydrogen
Metal + water
Metal hydroxide + hydrogen gas
Potassium + water
Potassium hydroxide + hydrogen gas
Metal + oxygen
Metal oxide
Silver + oxygen
Silver oxide
Displacement reaction
A displacement reaction is when a metal compound gets the metal removed and another metal taking it’s place by a chemical reaction. In the reactivity series if a metal is stronger than the one in the compound it will replace it.
Copper sulphate + magnesium
Magnesium sulphate + copper
Zinc oxide + iron
No reaction
Metal ore
A metal ore is a rock that contains metal. This metal can be extracted.
How is metal extracted from an ore?
Metal is extracted by ores using heat. The ore is placed in a furnace and heated up. The metal sinks to the bottom and then falls through the grate.
Thermite reaction
A thermite reaction is a displacement reaction where iron oxide i reduced and aluminium is oxidised. The reaction start to happen at around 1700°C so a magnesium ribbon is burned.
Reactivity series
The reactivity series tells us the order in how reactive the metals are and some also tell us what the metals can react with, e.g. water, ixygen.
What change could you see to the nail if the iron nail displaces copper in copper sulphate?
It would turn copper coloured, brown or pink.
