A group of traders travelling together.

A roadside inn where travellers could rest and recover from the day’s journey.
Oasis
A fertile spot in a desert, where water is found.
Merchant
A person who buys and sells products for profit.
Bandits
Criminals who attack travellers to steal from them.
Trade
The business of buying and selling or exchanging items.
Central Asia
A region in Asia which stretches from The Caspian Sea in the west to China and Mongolia in the east, and from Afghanistan and Iran in the south to Russia in the north.
Diffusion
The spreading of a feature or trend or idea from one place to another over time.
Trade route
Waterways, paths and trails that traders used to move goods for exchange from one place to another.
Taklamakan Desert
Desert of the Death - Silk Road avoided and went round it.
Caliphate
The area ruled by a caliph- a chief Muslim ruler.
What was the Silk Road?
The Silk Road was a 4000 mile trade route connecting China and the Far East with the Middle East and Europe.
What were some dangers faced by people travelling the Silk Road?
-Extreme weather conditions
-Terrain that was difficult

A group of important men who meet to advise the King and make decisions about the country.

The group of people living in England in 1066 when the Normans from France invaded.

A group of people from Normandy in France who invaded England led by William the Conqueror.

Important people who are given power by the king.
Knights
People who are given land in return for fighting for their lord or baron.
Peasant
People who own no land but are permitted to work on the land of the baron.
Tax
Money charged by the King or government. Amount depended on how much you own.
Provenance
The origin or a source. Where it came from or who created it.
Siege
A way of attacking by stopping supplies and people coming in and out of a castle or town.
Motte and bailey castle
A stone or wooden keep on a mound or hill with an enclosed coutyard.

What were William’s strengths in the Battle of Hastings?
He led a professional army and then tricked Harold into leaving the high ground.
What were Harold’s mistakes and weaknesses in the Battle of Hastings?
His men were tired from marching from the north and fell for William’s trick.
How was William lucky in the Battle of Hastings?
The wind changed at just the right time so arrived in England when Harold was in the north.

Brass plaques that were made to decorate the Oba’s palace.

Copper bands which were used as a currency when conducting trade between the European traders.
Divine Power
The belief that power came from a God.
Sumptuary laws
Laws which said who could see or speak to the Oba.

The name of the people who lived in Benin city. It is also the name of the language spoken.
Oba Ewuare
A king of Benin. He was one the greatest Kings of Benin.
Trade
The swapping of goods either for currency or other items between two groups of nations.

The main city in the kingdom of Benin.
Why did Benin become so powerful?
