Abject
something bad experienced to the maximum degree
The daunting ghost that appeared in front of me filled me with abject fear.
Apparition

severe, unfeeling or strict character or a place with no comfort or luxuries
He was an austere character who scared everyone he met.

twisted or bent out of the normal shape.

a persons face of facial expression
His countenance gave away no emotion.
Distained
a strong dislike of something, disgraced or to treat someone as though they are insignificant
He obviously didn’t like it from his distained reaction.
Dreary
depressingly dull and bleak
She had a dreary look on her face.
Eerie
something strange and frightening
The corridor had an eerie glow.
Foreboding
a feeling that something bad will happen
I had an overwhelming sense of foreboding as I entered the room.
Formidable
inspiring fear or respect through being impressively large intimidating or frightening.
It was a formidable monster that appeared from the forest.
Lurid
unpleasantly bright colour, harsh and unnatural looking.
The lurid green of his high vis jacket caught my eye.

important person or something that stands out

something that covers, or wraps around something like a dead body
The house was covered in a shroud of mist
Sombre
a feeling of sadness, or a dark or dull colour
The teacher had a sombre expression on his face.
Tumultuous
loud, excited, disorderly and sometimes violent
The hurricane was tumultuous and violent.
Vapour
a gas in the air that is suspended and visible
The toxic vapour strangled me as I gasped for air.
Vengeance
pay back! punishment or retribution for wrong doing.
He seeked vengeance after his plans were thwarted.
Blasphemies
the action or offence of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things; profane talk.

Beguiling
charming or enchanting, often in a deceptive way.
