What is Positive?
A number greater than zero.
What is Negative?
A number less than zero. Sometimes they are written with brackets around them.
What is a Zero Pair?
A pair of numbers that, when added together, equal zero. They cancel each other out.
What is Additive Inverse?
A number added to its additive inverse equals zero.
Subtraction can be written as…
…adding the additive inverse. This can be more powerful than the idea of taking away.
Reflection
An image or shape as it would be seen in a mirror.
Symmetric
When two or more parts are identical after a flip, slide or turn.
Index (plural indices) or power
The number of times a constant or variable has been multiplied by itself.
Square root
Inverse of squaring. A number that can be multiplied by itself to give the original number.
Cube or cubed
To multiply a number by itself three times.
Solutions to x squared =
Equations involving squares have two solutions: one positive and one negative.
