What did Katherine Nelson show about first words (Holophrastic stage)?
First words are often small objects and easily handled by the child. ‘cup’ OR things which move or make a noise. e.g. ‘car’
What 2 broad errors do children show in their vocabulary acquisition?
Underextension and overextension
What is overextension?
When a child uses a word in a wider context than an adult would. e.g. ‘ball’ to describe even a marble.
What is underextension?
When a child restricts the applications of a word. e.g. only uses ‘white’ to describe snow. Become confused when ‘white’ describes colour of book pages.
