Year 13 - Reactions Of Period 3 Elements Flashcards
Name the metallic elements in period 3
Sodium
Magnesium
Aluminium
Name the semi metal or metalloid in period 3
Silicon
Name the non metals in period 3
Phosphorous
Sulfur
Chlorine
What is the noble gas in period 3
Argon
Which are the only 2 elements in period 3 that react with water
Sodium - reacts vigorously, large amounts of effervescence, strongly alkaline solution formed (pH 13-14)
Magnesium - reaction slow at room temp’ less alkaline than sodium as it’s sparingly soluble
Much faster when heated with steam
How does sodium react with oxygen?
Burns brightly in air, yellow flame, forms white sodium oxide
How does magnesium react with oxygen ?
Burns brightly in air with white flame, white magnesium oxide powder produced
How does aluminium react with oxygen?
When aluminium powder is heated and then lowered into glass jar of o2 burns brightly to give aluminium oxide (white powder)
How does silicon react in air?
Forms silicon oxide when heated strongly with oxygen.
How does phosphorous react with oxygen?
Red phosphorous must be heated before it can react with o2. White phosphorous can react spontaneously in air with white smoke (phosphorous pentoxide). Red and white phosphorous are allotropes.
How does sulphur react in oxygen?
Sulfur powder is heated and lowered into o2 burns with a blue flame to form colourless sulphur dioxide.
