Q

Which are the only 2 elements in period 3 that react with water

A

Sodium - reacts vigorously, large amounts of effervescence, strongly alkaline solution formed (pH 13-14)
Magnesium - reaction slow at room temp’ less alkaline than sodium as it’s sparingly soluble
Much faster when heated with steam

Q

How does phosphorous react with oxygen?

A

Red phosphorous must be heated before it can react with o2. White phosphorous can react spontaneously in air with white smoke (phosphorous pentoxide). Red and white phosphorous are allotropes.
