Year 11 Ecology Flashcards
What is a biosphere
This is the volume of the earth’s surface where organisms can be found
What is a biome
These are several types of habitas which are all in a biosphere. Examples of biomes are tundra or tropical rainforest
What is a ecosystem
An ecosystem is a part if a biome.
Biomes are far too large to study so ecology work tends to be based around a particular ecosystem.
Each ecosystem has many different characteristics such as plants, animal, microbes and non living elements e.g. temperature
What is a community
This id all the different species that live in the same habitat at the same time. The word is often used to refer to organisms of a particular kind, such as the plant community in a garden
What is a populations
A population is made up of all the organisms of one species living together in the same place. An example of this would be ant living together under a rock
What is a individual
Each population is made up of many individuals. This would be an individual ant in a population of 1000s of ants
What is interdependence
This is where in each community each species depends on other species. For example, food, shelter and seed dispersal.
What are Biotic factors
A biotic factors is a living facto. For example the availability of food, predators, pathogens, one species outcompeting another.
What are abiotic factors
This are non-living favtors
