Year 10 Exam Flashcards
What are the bad properties of cotton?
Creases easily, high flammability, poor elasticity, can shrink when washed, dried slowly.
What is blending?
Blending is when two or more different fibres are combined to produce a yarn.
Give four reasons why you would combine fibres to make a fabric.
Appearance, practical qualities, working qualities and costs
What are the two types of questions?
Closed questions - yes or no answers
Open questions - not set answer, people go into detail
What is plain weave?
The weft yarn passes over and under alternate warp yarns, making it in patterned.
What is twill weave?
A twill weave created a diagonal pattern on the surface of the fabric. Went goes over two yearns and under one. This is then repeated.
What is satin weave?
The weft goes over four or more warp threads under one.
What are non-woven fibres?
Non woven fabrics are layer of fibres held together by binding or felting. They don’t fray and can be cut in any direction.
How are woven fabrics made?
Woven fabrics are made by interlacing two sets of yarns - the weft travels left to right and the warp travels up and down
What are components?
Components are bits and pieces that you use in addition to the fabric to make a textile product
What is another use for components?
Components can also be used as fastenings. Fastenings close products.
Give examples of other components.
Threads, interfacing and trimming such as lace, ribbons and sequins.
How do you make a plain seam?
Take 2 pieces of fabric and out the right sides together. Then pin or tack to hold the fabric in place. Stitch about 1.5cm from the edge. Strengthen the seam by reversing back over it. Finish the seam edged to stop them fraying. Then open out the seam and iron so it lies flat.
How do you manufacture safely?
Health and safety is essential for people working in textiles production. Manufacturers have to carry out risk assessment and follow regulations.
Who is legally responsible for the health and safety of people in the workplace?
Employers are legally responsible for their employees.
What does sustainability mean?
Sustainability me as not using up the finite resources or causing damage to the environment. Sustainable textiles nigh include using fabric made from renewable sources.
What is fairtrade?
Fairtrade means that the farmers get paid a fair price and factory workers are given decent pay and working conditions.
What is the main purpose of using embroidery?
You can do very intricate patterns.
Give one disadvantages of using embroidery.
Can be easily damaged so it’s difficult to care for.
What does CAD/CAM mean?
Computer aided manufacture / computer aided design
What are the different types of CAD/CAM machines?
Cutting machines Sewing machines Embroidery and knitting machines Fabric printers Cutters Pressing machines
Give some advantages of CAD/CAM
- Cam machines speed up production processes
* designs can be quickly and cheaply modelled and compared on screen
Give some disadvantages of CAD/CAM
- initial cost of the machine is high
* workers need training about how to use it
What are the good properties of cotton?
Strong, hard-wearing, absorbent, comfortable to wear, feels cool in hot weather, easy to wash and add colour to, doesn’t cause allergies, non-static and fairly cheap
