Q

What are valence electrons of atoms?

A

Valence electrons are basically the last shell of electrons (outer shell) of an atoms. For example Neon is 10th on the periodic table so its configuration is 2, 8. The second shell with 8 electrons is its valence shell

Q

What are ions?

A

Ion are atoms with an electric charge. If they have a negative charge they are called Anions, if they have a positive charge, they’re called Cations.

6
Q

What is an ionic bond and a covalent bond

A

Covalent Bond: when 2 non metals share electrons they are held together by opposite charges. There can be double and triple covalent bonds

Ionic Bond: is when an atom looses an electrons and another one gains them, to form an ion.

16
Q

What is an example of acid and metal?

A

Hydrochloric acid + magnesium = magnesium chloride + hydrogen gas

17
Q

What does an acid and carbonate make?

A

Salt + carbon dioxide + water

18
Q

What is an example of acid + carbonate

A

Sulfric acid and calcium carbonate = calcium sulfate + carbon dioxide + H2O

19
Q

What is the difference between a composition reaction and a decomposition reaction?

A

Composition reactions is when 2 or more reactants join together to form a single product. Where is a decomposition reaction is when a single product breaks down to make 2 or more.

20
Q

Example of decomposition reactions

A

Carbonic acid = water + carbon dioxide

21
Q

Example of thermal decomposition

A

Sodium azide = sodium + nitrogen gas

22
Q

Example of Precipitation Equation

A

Potassium chloride + silver nitrate = Potassium nitrate + silver chloride

24
Q

What is a precipitate?

A

a solid formed by a change in a solution, often due to a chemical reaction or change in temperature that decreases solubility of a solid

25
Q

Define the rate of reaction

A

The speed that products are formed form the reactants in a chemical reaction.

26
Q

Define exothermic

A

Release of heat

27
Q

Define endothermic

A

The absorption of heat

28
Q

Define Redox reactions

A

Redox reactions involve the transfer of electrons. You can use OILRIG (oxidation is loss reduction is gain) So an element looses electrons and gets oxidised, and another element gains that electron so , reduction.
