year 10 biology week 2 Flashcards
Nucleus
Stores the DNA (genetic information) which controls the chemical reactions
and activities of the cell.
Nucleolus
Involved in ribosome synthesis
Ribosomes
Where protein synthesis takes place
Mitochondria
Where cellular respiration takes place which supplies energy to the cell
Golgi
apparatus
Modifies and packages proteins to be sent to correct destination
Chloroplast
The organelle where photosynthesis takes place. They contain green
chlorophyll. They are not found in animal cells.
Cell membrane
Membrane that holds cell together and controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Cell wall
Provides shape support and protection to the cell. It is not found in animal
cells.
Cytoplasm
Fluid in cell containing cell organelles. It constantly flows
Vacuole
Fluid filled sacs that store food, water and wastes. Vacuoles in plant cells are
much larger than in animal cells.
Endoplasmic
reticulum
A network of membranes that serves as a transport system to transport
materials through the cell.
List three differences between plant and animal cells
•AC has cenyrioles
•PC has cell wall - strength
•PC has choroplasts - photosynthesis
What are all the Nitrogen bases?
Guanine, Cytosine, Adenine, Thymine
How many chromosomes does a human have?
23 pairs or 46 chromosomes
What is the role of DNA
DNA contains the genetic codes for how to make the proteins in an organism
