Year 1 Flashcards
Hyperplasia
Increase in number of cells.
Examples of hyperplasia
Endometrial lining, infected lymph nodes, liver regeneration.
Occurrence of hyperplasia
In response to stimuli, so will regress if stimuli is withdrawn.
Can hyperplasia become malignant?
Yes, carries low risk of neoplastic transformation due to growth becoming autonomous.
Hypertrophy
Increase in cell size.
Causes of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy
Hypertension, Aortic Stenosis, HOCM.
Atrophy
Decrease in cell size and/or cell number
Example of atrophy
Not using muscles for a long period of time.
Occurrence of atrophy
Withdrawal of stimulus, and is hormonal or mechanical.
Metaplasia
(Reversible) change of one mature cell type to another
Examples of metaplasia
Barrett’s Oesophagus (stratified squamous to intestinal columnar)
Smoking (ciliated columnar to stratified squamous in lungs)
Neoplasia
New cell growth, without stimulus.
What can neoplasia be?
No malignant potential, Pre-malignant, Malignant
No malignant potential example
Benign= squamous papilloma
Dysplasia
Disordered cell growth
