yeah 1 Flashcards
biological psychology
the scientific study of the biological bases of behavior and mental processes
neurons
basic cells of the nervous system, communicates throughout nervous system.
cells that are highly specialized to receive and transmit information from one part of your body to another
Sensory neuron
conveys information about the enviorment, such as light or sound
carries info from skin and internal organs to brain
motor neuron
communicates to muscles and glands
basic components of neurons
cell body, dendrites, and axon
interneuron
communicates information between neurons (most neurons are interneurons, many connect)
cell body
processes nutrients, providing the energy needed to function (called soma)
Where is the neculus?
Cell body, containing the DNA (chromosomes)
dendrites
the part of the neuron that receives messages from other neurons, short branching fibers
the more branches they have, the more info they recieve
axon
carries information to other parts of the body. neurons, muscles or glands
single long tube that extends from cell body into most neurons. neurons only have 1 axon
glaial cells
cells that provide the structural and functional support for neurons throughout the nervous system. alot in the brain, take up 50%
oligoden
form myelin sheath, a white and fatty, covering some axons
insaltes, and makes faster
microgali
clean up work. break down and removed damaged and dead
a lot of this in brain is sign of infection, stroke, or trauma
arstrocratos
most common. structural support, provide nutrient, help keep healthy. keeps toxic shit away. capable of dividing
neurons only become active when stimulated by another source
just know this
stimulus threshold
the minimum level of stimulation required to activate a particular neuron
