YE Flashcards
Precipitation
(Inputs) Moisture in any form
Interception
(Storage) Temporary storage as water is captured by plants, buildings and hard surfaces before reaching the soil.
Vegetation Storage
(Storage) Moisture taken up by vegetation; held within plants
Surface storage
(Storage) Any surface water in lakes, ponds and puddles
Soil Moisture
(Storage) Water held within the soil
Groundwater Storage
(Storage) Water held within permeable rocks (AKA aquifers)
Caused by percolation
Channel storage
(Storage) Water held in river and streams
Infiltration
(Flow/Process) Water entering the topsoil, generally during slow/steady rainfall
Throughflow
(Flow/Process) AKA interflow. Water seeping laterally through soil below surface but above water table
Perlocation
(Flow/Process) Water seeping through (permeable) rocks under the effects of gravity
Stem Flow
(Flow/Process) Water flowing down plant stems or pipes
Base Flow
(Flow/Process) AKA Groundwater flow. Water seeping into river channel
Channel flow
(Flow/Process) The volume of water flowing within a river channel (discharge)
Surface Runoff
(Flow/Process) AKA overland flow. flow over the surface during an intense storm where infiltration is impossible.
Evaporation
(Output) conversion of water into vapor
