The main objective of the YCJA
Rehabilitate and reintegrate young offenders into society, implement community based solutions, police warnings, restorative justice agencies and protocols, and extra judicial sanctions, custodial sentences should be a last resort.
Non-violent and first time offender
Most youth, youth conferences decide which extrajudicial measures and sanctions are used, place offenders in programs, provide opportunity for restituition, ejm can show up on youth record for up to 5 years.
Violent and repeat offenders
Have been convicted of one of four serious violent offences (attempted murder, murder, manslaughter, aggravated sexual assault), have a pattern of repeat violent offences, have committed an offence where an adult would be given a sentence of two or more years in jail.
Consequences of youth records
Criminal records remain for up to five years after the youth has completed their sentence, ten years for a violent offence. May prohibit youth from travelling or securing certain types of jobs, adult sentences = adult criminal record.
