Yarns Flashcards
What is the definition of a yarn?
A fine continuous length of fibres or filaments with or without twist
Why do you twist yarns?
Make them stronger so they are suitable for weaving or knitting
What letter is created when a yarn is spun clockwise?
Z - twist
What letter is created when a yarn is spun anti-clockwise?
S - twist
Spun fabrics have what yarn in the warp and weft?
Z twist goes in the warp
S twist goes in the weft
Why do they have two different directions of yarns in fabric?
Light reflected in opposite directions and striped effects can be produced
What is the twist level?
the number of twisters per metre, this can determine end use
What are the properties of a low twist yarn and what are they more likely to be used for?
Softer, weaker, bulkier and likely to be used in weft yarns/ knitting
What are the properties of a high twist yarn and what are they more likely to be used for?
Stronger, harder and they more likely to be used in weaving because they can withstand tension from the tension from the loom
What are spun yarns?
Made by mechanical assembly
Spinning of staple of fibres
Fibres like: Cotton, linen, wool, silk
What are filament yarns?
Continuous filaments of silk or synthetic fibres
Fibres like polyester or polyamide
What are single yarns?
Continuous single thread of twisted staple or continuous filament fibres
One fibre of blended
What are plied yarns?
Twisting two or more singles together to make a thicker and stronger yarn
This can be the same of type or different types to improve strength, weight or add special effects
What is a core spun yarn?
Multi-component yarns and the core stays in the centre whilst other staple fibres are spun around to cover it in the single spinning process
What is usually core spun?
Elastane covered by fibres like wool, cotton, silk, nylon or linen
